What Fans Really Think Of Barry Keoghan’s Joker

When Matt Reeves revealed that Barry Keoghan was indeed playing the Clown Prince of Crime in “The Batman,” he also described a deleted scene between Joker and the Caped Crusader. It was a fascinating cat and mouse concept that pitted the two most important characters in the Batman franchise against each other in a “Silence of the Lambs” style standoff.

But fans wondered if they would ever get the chance to see this scene, which Reeves confirmed was in the movie up until the very end. Their curiosity has been answered, and the scene in question has been unleashed upon the internet. Now that everyone has had a chance to see it, let’s take a look at what fans really think of Barry Keoghan’s Joker.

How did Barry Keoghan’s Joker get his scars? Batman director explains backstory

Barry Keoghan’s Joker has different scars than other clowns on screen. Matt Reeves explains the backstory for this new iteration.

Batman released a deleted scene this week featuring Robert Pattinson’s Batman and Barry Keoun’s The Joker. Although Keoghan’s Joker made a brief appearance in Batman’s theatrical run, it wasn’t until the five-minute deleted scene that fans got a full look at the new version of the character. The clown has lost most of his hair, has blood on his nails, and has scars on his face that are very different from previous screen clowns.

In an interview with Variety’s Adam B. Vary earlier this month, Batman director Matt Reeves broke down the comic book tent pole ending and ambiguous Joker cameo. Reeves said at the time that Keegan’s Joker was going to break with tradition in the villain’s appearance. The Joker didn’t fall into a vat of chemicals (see Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton’s “Batman”), nor did it say why he was scarred (see Heath in “The Dark Knight”) Ledger).

“It’s like ‘The Phantom of the Opera,'” Reeves said in an interview. “He has a congenital condition and he can’t stop smiling, which is bad. Half of his face is covered for most of the film.”

“It’s not some version of him falling into a vat of chemicals and his face being contorted, or what [Christopher] Nolan did and how those scars on his face came about,” Reeves added. “What if this guy was born with this disease, cursed? His smile was jaw-dropping, weird and scary. Even as a kid, people would look at him in horror and his reaction would be, ‘Okay. , so I was made fun of’, that’s his nihilistic worldview.”

One reference point for Keoghan’s Joker is David Lynch’s The Elephant Man, Reeves told IGN. Now that Keegan’s Joker has been revealed more fully thanks to the deleted scene, will this iteration of the future Crown Prince return?

“There may be some places,” Reeves told Variety in the same interview. “There’s something I’d love to do in Arkham’s room, maybe for HBO Max. We talked about something there. So it’s quite possible. There’s a story coming back where the Joker came into our world, which also Not impossible.”

Batman is now in theaters nationwide. Click here to read Variety’s full interview with Reeves.
